WICKEN NOTES AND DIARY FOR DECEMBER 2017/JANUARY 2018
A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL
St Margarets Church and Community Centre – Please check centre pages for details of church services during December and January. Highlights are the annual Carol and Christingle Service at 6.30 pm on Sunday 17 December, followed by mulled drinks and mince pies. All welcome, especially families and young children. Carol singing around the village will take place on Monday 18 December – rendezvous at Arkesden corner 7.00 pm – collecting for Save the Children. All welcome to join us – or to give generously if you’re not able to!! Followed by log fire, mulled wine and mince pies at Marches. We also have our ‘midnight’ communion service at 11.30 pm on Christmas Eve, 24 December, to welcome in and share the joy of Christmas. Please ring Margaret Davis on 550703, Anna on 540610 or Richard on 541522 if you want more information or to ask any questions. Don’t forget – the Wicken Centre is available for hire for events and family parties at very reasonable rates. Also Centre equipment can be hired – chairs, tables etc. – and we have just been given a large leaf blower/collector which can also be hired for that autumn chore. Please ring Richard on 541522 if you are interested.
Neighbourhood Watch – At the annual Parish Meeting, Anthony Donovan very kindly offered to take on the responsibilities of Wicken Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator. That’s really good news and all present thanked him warmly. More to follow.
Village Quiz – as ever, the quiz on 10 November was much enjoyed by nearly 60 ‘quizzers’. In a close-run contest, the winners were The Brochettes! Food was sausage and mash and ticket sales, raffle and ‘heads and tails’ raised over £525 for village funds. Many thanks to Mike Smith (Quizmaster), all who helped set up, provided and served food and helped clear up afterwards - and of course to all who supported the event.
Christmas Bazaar (‘Rosey’s do’) - this will follow the same format as last year – held at 6.00 pm on Friday 1 November and continuing the following morning at Breakfast Club. There will be gift stalls (inc a children’s stall), tombola, and raffle, wine, and nibbles. Children very welcome.
100 Club – November winners were Marian Janke and Carol Bowyer. Congratulations to them both.
Garden Club - Viv McLennan writes ‘The Pot Luck supper on 23 November was lots of fun and all present greatly enjoyed the delicious mains and sweets. Many thanks to those who prepared and provided for the truly gastronomic feast. Our next event is the Christmas Floral Demonstration by Jenny Burgess on 14 December. Please contact Frances on 541341 or Viv on 512121 for more information’.
Art Group – Viv McLennan writes ‘Seven members visited the Degas Exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum. It was a large and fascinating look at his work. We also had a ‘fun’ afternoon when Jenny Burgess taught us how to model with salt dough. The results will be on sale at ‘Rosey’s Do’ on 1 December. Our end of term lunch will be at Clavering Lakes on 13 December. No meeting on 20 and 27 December but informal sessions resume on 3 January and tutored sessions with Ken Mark from 17 January’. If you would like to join to group, please phone Viv on 541121 for more information and to add your name to the waiting list.
Wicken Ladies – Jenny Burgess writes ‘Since the last Parish News, Wicken Ladies have visited Mandy’s Heaven for some enjoyable retail therapy. The film night on 10 November was very well attended with nineteen ladies sitting down to watch ‘Sabrina’ on the big screen at Wicken House. Many thanks to Jane for her very generous hospitality. Our next get-together will be at 7.30 pm on 7 December in the Community Centre for something festive and we will also, hopefully, be able to see the results of the pottery evening held earlier in the year. As always, everyone is welcome to any of our events’. For more info about any of these events or activities, or if you want to be included in the mailings, please email Jenny on firstname.lastname@example.org or Tanya on email@example.com.
Carpet bowls – 7.30 pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays in the month – so 12 December (but not 26th!) and 9 and 23 January. It would be great to have some new members. We’re a friendly group with a warm welcome. Come along and try it! (contact Joan Morgan on 542558).
Breakfast Club – December and January meetings are at the Wicken Centre from 10.00 am on Saturday 2 December and Saturday 6 January. Come along and enjoy coffee and Danish – and catch up on local news and gossip. Edward Oliver, our District Councillor, is normally there as well.
Book Club – no meeting in December. Next meeting – 7.30 pm in the Wicken Centre on Thursday 25 January – the book is yet to be announced. For more information, please email Marion Tyrell at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Handbells (Belle-plates) Group – weekly rehearsals at 7.30 pm on Mondays. Currently practising hard for our ‘performance’ at the annual Carol Service. We’ld love more members.
