WICKEN NOTES AND DIARY FOR OCTOBER 2017

St Margarets Church and Community Centre
Please check centre pages for details of church services during October.  The evening service at 6.00 pm on Sunday 1 October will be Sung Evensong and Communion and the following week the Family Service at 9.30 am will be the annual Harvest Festival.   Please ring Margaret Davis on 550703, Anna on 540610 or Richard on 541522 if you want more information or to ask any questions.

Jumble Sale – we raised nearly £270 this year – a little down on the last two years – but it was a fun event and the teas and cakes went down a treat.  Sincere thanks to those who gave and bought jumble, and to those who helped sort and set up, made cakes and stood the stalls.

‘Dig for Wicken’ – we’re hoping to have this exhibition and discussion of the findings of the ‘dig’ during Breakfast Club from 10.00am on Saturday 7 October. All welcome.

Neighbourhood Watch – please see Joan Morgan’s note about our village scheme elsewhere in this magazine.  We need a co-ordinator if the scheme is to continue!

100 Club - July and August winners were Christine Alexander, Paul Alexander, Emma Murray and Claire Morris.  Congratulations to them all.

Garden Club - Viv McLennan writes ‘Our next outing is by coach to Kew Gardens on 29 September (to be reported in next issue) to see the glasshouses, Marianne North Gallery and The Hive.  Later in the year there will be the Pot Luck supper and the Christmas Decoration Demonstration in December.  Please contact Frances on 541341 or Viv on 512121 for more information’.

Art Group – Viv McLennan writes ‘Our new term starts on Wednesday 4 October with Ken Mark.  In the meantime, we continue to meet informally every Wednesday from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm’.  If you would like to join to group, please phone Viv on 541121 for more information and to add your name to the waiting list.

Wicken Ladies – Jenny Burgess writes ‘In August, a group of ladies had a very pleasant and sociable visit to Mary (Winston)’s new tea rooms in Balsham.  (Mary used to live at Clarkes Cottage.)  They enjoyed delicious cakes and a variety of teas and coffee in her lovely sunny courtyard.  The ‘have a go at pottery’ evening in the event was held at St Marks College, Audley End on 21 September and will be reported in the next issue. Several dates are planned for the rest of the year and beyond, including a visit to Mandy’s Heaven in October, a film night on 9 November, a get-together in the Community Centre on 7 December (where we will provide an up-date on the village Neighbourhood Watch scheme in light of the recent spate of burglaries) and, looking further ahead, the annual Wicken Ladies Bake-off on 21 June 2018! As always, everyone is welcome to any of our events’.  For more info, please email Jenny on jennyburgess926@btinternet.com or Tanya on tanyapatience@gmail.com.

Carpet bowls – 7.30 pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays in the month – so 10 and 24 October.  We’re a friendly group with a warm welcome for new members.  Come along and try it! (contact Joan Morgan on 542558).

Breakfast Club – The next meeting is at the Wicken Centre from 10.00 am on Saturday 7 October. Please come along and enjoy coffee and Danish – and catch up on local news and gossip. This month there will also be a report on the ‘Dig for Wicken’ event earlier in the year and an exhibition of village history.

Book Club – next meeting – 7.30 pm in the Wicken Centre on Thursday 26 October – the book is yet to be announced.  For more information, please email Marion Tyrell at mt1@btinternet.com.

The Handbells (Belle-plates) Group – weekly rehearsals continue at 7.30 pm on Mondays.  We’ld love more members.  No experience necessary – and it’s fun! Come along to have a go! Bring a friend!! If you’re interested, please ring Joan Morgan on 542558 or Richard Taylor on 541522.
