WICKEN NOTES AND DIARY FOR AUGUST 2017

St Margarets Church and Community Centre
Please check centre pages for details of church services during August which will be held in other churches in the benefice.  Please ring Margaret Davis on 550703, Anna on 540610 or Richard on 541522 if you want more information or to ask any questions.

Citizens’ Advice – we’ve had information about a number of issues you might want advice about from Citizens’ Advice – including benefit entitlements, budgeting and money worries, problems with housing and employment issues.  Citizens’ Advice also provides a sign-posting service to other specialist services if these are more appropriate.  For more information or help, go to www.uttlesfordfrontline.org.uk. or call 01799 618855.  We’ve also had information about fare increases for local school transport.  If you are affected and want advice, please call Citizens’ Advice on 01799 618846 or call Stephensons (the bus company) direct on 01376 503050.

Safari Supper on 24 June – A great evening.  The weather held up and the food was delicious.  Thanks to all the hosts for their generosity in providing and preparing the food and making their homes available – and to all who enjoyed it.  The evening raised £332.50 for village funds.

100 Club  - £50 winners were Nathaniel Morgan and George Rieveley, and £10 winners were Rosemary Nash and Hamish Alexander.  Warmest congratulations to them all.

Garden Club  - Viv McLennan writes ‘We had a great day out at Easton Walled Gardens where they grow many varieties of sweet pea. Wicken should smell wonderful next summer as we bought lots of sweet pea seed!  The autumn programme will include our Pot Luck Supper, a Flower-arranging evening with Jenny Burgess and hopefully a trip to Kew for the autumn colour.’  Please contact Frances on 541341 or Viv on 512121 for more information.

Art Group – Viv McLennan writes ‘We are having a guest tutor on 2 August.  Glynis Barnes-Mellish will be showing us how to paint portraits and helping us with our own attempts.  We continue to meet informally every Wednesday from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm’.  As already explained, sadly, as the group as grown, we are having to limit the number of members, so if you would like to join, please phone Viv on 541121 for more information and to add your name to the waiting list.

‘Dig for Wicken’ – sadly the brief History Exhibition planned for the July Breakfast Club had to be postponed and will now take place later in the year.

Drop in for Coffee – this popular monthly event is held in the Clavering Christian Centre from 10 am - 12 noon on the first Thursday of the month.  The next session is on Thursday 3 August.  Please try it – and if you need transport, please ring Richard on 541522 or Anna on 540610.

Wicken Ladies – Plans are still being finalised for the next full get-together in September when a ‘have a go at pottery’ evening will be held.  There are also plans for a visit to Hemingford Grey manor and gardens    in September, for another film night later in the autumn and possibly some cheese-making in Spring 2018.  Everyone is welcome to any of our events’.  For more info, please email Jenny on jennyburgess926@btinternet.com or Tanya on tanyapatience@gmail.com.
