WICKEN NOTES AND DIARY FOR AUGUST 2018 St Margarets Church and Community Centre – Please check centre pages for details of church services during August, which will be at other churches in the benefice. New Village Sign – our new village sign will be installed in September and Kemi Badenoch, our MP, will formally ‘cut the ribbon’ at 6.00 pm on Thursday 27 September following which she will join us for a reception in the Community Centre. Please keep the date – and join us. Safari Supper – a lovely sunny evening on 23 June, and 4 delicious courses and company much enjoyed. Many thanks to all the hosts and those who prepared and gave their wonderful culinary efforts. The event raised £465 for village funds. Breakfast Club – 10.00 am – 12.00 noon Saturday 4 August. Come along and enjoy coffee and Danish – and catch up on local news and gossip. Edward Oliver, our District Councillor, is normally there as well. 100 Club – July winners were Frank Dudley and George Rieveley. Warmest congratulations to both of them. Garden Club - Viv McLennan writes ‘The club had a very happy visit Thundridge Hill House. So much to see in a wonderful setting overlooking the valley of the River Rib and an adandoned church – very Gothic! The owners provided a sumptuous tea in their beautiful garden. A great afternoon. Future visits are planned to a newish garden with unusual plants and a small woodland garden in Little Hadham on the afternoon of Thursday 9 August (meet at pub at 1.45 pm, cost £8 to include tea/coffee and cake). Also another all day coach trip, to RHS Wisley on Thursday 27 September (meet at pub at 8.40 am, cost £42.70, RHS members £30.50 – please bring membership cards!) Art Group – Jill Turner writes ‘During August, the Art Group will meet informally as usual at 10.30 am on Wednesdays. Also, we are very pleased with the quality and attractive cards we produced depicting 8 saints from the south-facing stained glass windows of St Margaret’s Church - £5 per pack of 6 cards – all profits to church funds. The cards are blank inside, so will be good for any occasion as well as Christmas. Available at Breakfast Club and from Art Group members. We shall also be producing our calendar for 2019 and this will be available early in August. For more information, please ring Jill Turner on 543680’. Wicken Ladies – Jenny Burgess writes ‘The Wicken Ladies organised a very sociable tapas evening at Anantas on 5 July. We were joined by partners and friends, and the warm evenings we’ve been enjoying recently meant that we could sit outside for the whole evening savouring a range of delicious tapas. Our next full get-together will be in September, and then a film night is planned for the autumn along with various other outings and get-togethers’.
